There were nine of us and we had all met through an online hiking group six months before this trip. Some of us had trekked before, some had not, and I genuinely was not sure how a group that size would handle the Annapurna Base Camp Trek together. The answer was better than I could have ever imagined. By day two on the trail from Chhomrong climbing through the rhododendron and bamboo forests toward Dovan, we had completely stopped feeling like strangers. Someone was always waiting at a rest stop for the slower ones, someone always had extra snacks, someone always had a terrible joke ready for the steep sections above Himalaya Hotel that your legs absolutely did not want to climb.
Reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters inside the Annapurna Sanctuary as a group was something else entirely. Standing in that natural amphitheater completely ringed by Annapurna I at 8,091 meters, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna and Hiunchuli with nine people you have just been through something real with there was a lot of hugging. A lot of photos. A lot of just standing quietly looking up. The Modi Khola valley descent the next morning felt bittersweet in a way none of us expected. We came for the mountains and left with people we will keep for a long time.
