Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is a gratifying journey that takes you off beaten paths and offers mesmerizing views of mountain panoramas. The trek offers beautiful views of mountains such as Mount Kanchenjunga, Kabru, Pyramid Peak, Twin Peaks, Jannu, Talung Yalung Kang and other surrounding peaks.

Visiting the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and Oktang View Point is the key highlight of this 24-day journey.

Itinerary of Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

Day 1:  Arrival in Kathmandu

Kathmandu Elevation: (1400 m / 4600 ft)

After you land at the airport in Kathmandu, you will meet our representative and we will have a short meet and greet session. Then, you will enjoy a scenic ride in a comfortable private vehicle towards your designated hotel. You can then check in and take your time rest and be refreshed.. In your free time in the evening, you may walk around the streets or Kathmandu, visit nearby local shops and immerse in the vibrant atmosphere of this bustling city. 

You can wander around Kathmandu Durbar Square, where you will witness many ancient buildings, temples, local stalls, cafes and restaurants. This site has a great history and is religiously important to the locals. Likewise, the architecture of the Durbar Square is fascinating.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Your 2nd day will be culturally enriching as you will spend the day sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley. You will visit Boudhanath Stupa and Pashupatinath Temple listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Pashupati Nath Temple is located at Gaushala in Kathmandu and is significant for the hindus. Visiting this world heritage sight will provide you with insights into the culture and rituals of the locals. Likewise, you will also explore the Boudhanath Stupa. Located in Boudha Kathmandu, the place holds great spiritual importance for Buddhists. The place is serene and you will feel the most peaceful ambiance while walking around the Stupa.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and Drive to Ilam

Flight Duration: 45 minutes

Bhadrapur Elevation: (91 m/ 298 ft)

Ilam Elevation: (1627/ 5338 ft)

Drive Duration: 4 to 5 hours

On this day, you will take an exhilarating flight to Bhadrapur. We will arrange your pick-up from the hotel and drop you off at the Kathmandu airport, from where you will board the flight to Bhadrapur. The scenic views of beautiful green hills and landmarks will keep you captivated throughout the flight. Bhadrapur lies at 91 m. You will witness the beauty of beautiful lowlands while in Bhadrapur. Then, you will enjoy a picturesque drive from Bhadrapur to Ilam.

 Firstly, you will pass through the lowlands of the Jhapa district, where you will see unique modern and traditional houses and rice farms. Soon afterward, the flat road will turn into winding roads with the views of hills becoming clear. The road is well paved and smooth and you will witness the most beautiful views of the surroundings which will keep you immersed throughout the drive. Then, you will arrive in the beautiful city of tea garden, Kanyam.

You can take your tea or coffee break in this enchanting area. This is the most popular touristy spot in the Illam district. You can see the beautiful tea garden and surrounding hills from this point. Then, after a short break, you will continue the scenic drive again and finally arrive in Illam. You will stay at one of the finest hotels in Ilam overnight.

4: Drive from Ilam to Taplejung

Ilam Elevation: (1627/ 5338 ft)

Taplejung Elevation: (1820m/5971 ft)

Drive Duration: 4 to 5 houDay rs

Your destination for 4th day of journey is Taplejung. On this day you will be immersed in picturesque scenery while enjoying a drive from Ilam to Taplejung. Driving through winding roads you will be rewarded with beautiful views of hills and charming traditional villages.

The views of thick forests and terraced fields are stunning. You will pass through Phidim and get glimpses of the traditional and modern houses. Afterward, you will reach Suketar the headquarters of the Taplejung district. Then, after a short drive you will finally arrive in your designated hotel in Taplejung where you will stay for the night.

Day 5: Drive to Chirwa and Trek from Chirwa to Sekathum

Drive Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Sekthum Elevation: (1585 m/ 5200 ft)

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

On the fifth day of your Kanchanjunga Circuit Trek, you will drive from Taplejung to Chirwa. The drive is 3 to 4 hours long and will keep you captivated rewarding you with enchanting views of the ethereal scenery of beautiful hills.

After you arrive in Chirwa, your journey on foot begins. You will make your way through Tamor river and arrive in Tapethok village. Then, you will cross a beautiful bridge over a serene Sumbuwa river. Afterwards, you will ascend towards Ghunsa Khola Valley. Following the trail through the river you will finally arrive at Sekathum Village. Afterwards, you can follow the trail towards your teahouse, rest your bags and get much required rest.

Day 6: Trek from Sekhtum to Amjilosa

Sekthum Elevation: (1585 m/ 5200 ft)

Amjilosa Elevation: (2510 m/ 8234 ft)

Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

The trek begins from Sekathum and you will make your way towards Amjilosa. You will trek along the Tamar river and cross an exhilarating suspension bridge. Then, you will trek through the grassy slopes and witness the enthralling views of the ethereal landscapes. You will ascend along the beautiful Ghunsa Khola while witnessing the stunning views of the surroundings. In addition, you will cross many bridges throughout the journey.

You will trek through the steep sections and small settlements. The healing sounds of many small streams will make your trek healing and enchanting. You will trek through the rocky section of trail and cross suspension bridges and finally arrive in Amjilosa. You will stay overnight at a teahouse in Amjilosa.

Day 7: Trek from Amjilosa to Gyabla

Amjilosa Elevation: (2510 m / 8234 ft)
Gyabla Elevation: (2730 m / 8956 ft)
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours

From the beautiful Amjilosa, you will go to Gyabla after a fulfilling breakfast. The trail passes through thick, tranquil forests. Likewise, you will witness several waterfalls along the way. You will trek through the oak and rhododendron forests along the trail feeling the serene ambiance of nature.

Soon afterward, you will navigate the rocky terrains and pass through the landslide prone areas.  After Crossing several suspension bridges and ascending the rocky trail, you will finally arrive in Gyabla. You will stay overnight in Gyabla.

Day 8: Trek from Gyabla to Ghunsa

Gyabla Elevation: (2730 m / 8956 ft)

Ghunsa Elevation: (3595m/11794 ft)

You will trek to Ghunsa from Gyabla on this day. You will hike down through the stone stairs in the initial phase. Soon afterward you will ascend through the rocky paths. The sights and sounds of the serene river flowing will make your journey joyful.

Then, you will ascend the stone stairs to Phale village. There, you will witness a few settlements and a picturesque monastery. Then, you will cross the thrilling suspension bridge and make your way through the narrow and rocky paths and finally make it to Ghunsa. For the night, you will stay in one of the teahouses in Ghunsa.

Day 9: Acclimatization Day in Ghunsa

Ghunsa Elevation: (4000 m / 13,123 ft)

On the 9th day, you will have your acclimatization day in Ghunsa. On this day you will explore the scenic nearby surrounding spots of Ghunsa village.  You can go for hikes in nearby monasteries or viewpoints.

Likewise, you can also explore the village of Ghunsa and get insights into the local lifestyle by interacting with the locals. In addition you can ascend the top of ridge and witness beautiful views of Mount Jannu. You can then return to your teahouse and get a restful sleep.

Day 10: Trek from Ghunsa to Kambachen

Ghunsa Elevation: (4000 m / 13,123 ft)
Kambachen Elevation: (4050 m / 13,287 ft)
Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

After spending an acclimatization day in Ghunsa, you will trek towards Kambachen. You will make your way to Kambachen. Crossing the wooden bridges and trekking through the rocky paths is exhilarating. In addition, the snowy mountains appear closer as you climb up. You will then cross the suspension bridge of Ghunsa river and make your way through steep trail. After crossing the wooden bridge over a flowing small stream you will make it your destination of the day which is Kambachen.

Day 11: Acclimatization Day (Trek to Janu Himal Base Camp)

Kambachen Elevation: (4050 m / 13,287 ft)
Janu Himal Base Camp Elevation: (4500 m / 14,763 ft)
Trek Duration: 7 hours

This is your second acclimatization day and you can visit Janu Himal Base Camp. You will cross a suspension bridge and hike through the large stone steps. You will then continue the hike and finally arrive at the Jannu Himal Base Camp.

After arriving at Jannu Himal Base Camp, you can behold the enchanting beauty of Janu Peak. The clear views of the snowy peaks can be seen from the Jannu viewpoint which will enrich your sightseeing experience. Then, after observing the ethereal beauty of alluring peaks and immersing yourself in its beauty you can head back to Kambachen for an overnight stay.

Day 12: Trek from Kambachen to Lhonak

Kambachen Elevation: (4050 m / 13,287 ft)
Lhonak Elevation: (4785 m / 15,698 ft)
Trek Duration: 5 hours

Your journey to Lonak begins early in the morning after breakfast. You will trek through the rocky paths. Along the way the view of a beautiful waterfall will captivate your heart.

On this day you can see a clear view of the snowy peaks which enriches your journey  and make the whole journey scenic and exhilarating. You will navigate the narrow section of the trail and cross the wooden bridge over the serene Lhonak River and finally arrive at Lhonak.

There are some tea houses in Lhonak and this beautiful area is surrounded by stiff cliffs and snow capped mountains. You will stay at Lhonak for the night and get a restful sleep.

Day 13: Trek from Lhosank Kanchenjunga North Base Camp

Lhonak Elevation: (4785 m / 15,698 ft)
Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Elevation: (5143 m / 16,873 ft)
Trek Duration: 8 hours

You will go to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp on this day. You will make your way through the moraine of the Kanchenjunga glacier and ascend to the north base camp.

The views of mountains can be seen very clearly as you ascend through the rugged landscapes. When you finally reach the North Base Camp, you will be fascinated with the enchanting views of Mt. Kanchenjunga.  In addition, you can also witness views of snowy peaks such as Wedge Peak, Nepal Peak and Tent Peak. You can immerse yourself in serenity and beautiful views of the surrounding area and make your way back to Lhonak for the night.

Day 14: Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa

Lhonak Elevation: (4785 m / 15,698 ft)
Ghunsa Elevation: (3595 m / 11,794 ft)
Trek Duration: 7 hours

On Day 14, you will trek to Ghunsa from Lhonak. You will trek while beholding at the scenery of a beautiful river. The trail is a mix of flat, steep and rugged sections. In addition, the glimpses of breathing mountain panoramas make the trek even more exciting. You will come across several chortens and mani walls along the trail. You will stay overnight in Ghunsa on this day.

Day 15: Trek from Ghunsa to Selele La Base Camp

Ghunsa Elevation: (3595 m / 11,794 ft)
Selele La Base Camp Elevation: (4200 m / 13,779 ft)
Trek Duration: 4–5 hours

Your journey to Sele Le Base Camp begins in the morning after breakfast. You will pass through the rugged terrains and cross the wooden bridge along the trail. The view of the wooden bridge over a flowing river is stunning.

You will mostly pass through the rugged pathways in most sections of the trail. Soon afterwards, you will climb up through the grassy terrains and you will finally arrive at Selele Base Camp. For the night, you will stay at the base camp.

Day 16: Trek from Selele La to Cheram (Cross the 3 passes)

Selele La Elevation: (4200 m / 13,779 ft)
Cheram Elevation:
(3870 m / 12,696 ft)
Trek Duration: 7–8 hours

Your destination for Day 16 is Cheram.  You will climb up the rocky terrains, witnessing the enchanting views of Jannu Peak. You will take an uphill trail to the Sele Le ridge with has mesmerizing views of Mount Makalu.

Then, you will cross the Selele-La Pass from where you can see clear and close views of the snowy peaks. You will trek through a side of a cliff and cross the Sinion La Pass and Mirgin La pass. Then, you will pass through the beautiful Sinelapche Bhanjyang.

On this day you will be treated to the mesmerizing view of Blue Lake. You will walk through the uphill and downhill trails and descend to Cheram.

Day 17: Trek from Cheram to Ramche and back to Cheram (via Oktang View Point)

Cheram Elevation: (3870 m / 12,696 ft)
Ramche Elevation: (4580 m / 15,026 ft)
Oktang View Point Elevation: (4730 m / 15,517 ft)
Trek Duration: 7–8 hours

On the day of your journey, you will trek Ramche from Cheram. The trail is steep and passes through the tranquil flowing river.  In addition, you will walk through the Yalong glacier and also witness the alluring mountain panoramas along the trail.

You will trek a short break in Ramche and hike to Oktang View Point, passing through the rugged pathways. From this viewpoint, you can get clear views of Mt Kanchenjunga, Kabru and Rathong and many other peaks. Then, you will trek back to Cheram for overnight stay.

Day 18: Trek from Cheram to Torongding

Cheram Elevation: (3870 m / 12,696 ft)
Torongding Elevation: (2080 m / 6824 ft)
Trek Duration: 5–6 hours

Today you will follow mostly downhill route today from Cheram to Torongding. You will trek across a gorge on this. Likewise, you will also cross tranquil lush forests on this day feeling the fresh ambiance of a serene atmosphere.

You will ascend through a landslide-prone area, so you must be careful while trekking. After trekking the uphill section where there are no settlements, you will finally arrive at Torongding. You will stay in a beautiful teahouse for the night.

Day 19: Trek from Torongding to Sherpa Gaun

Torongding Elevation: (2080 m / 6824 ft)
Sherpa Gaun Elevation: (2200 m / 7217 ft)
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours

On day 19, you will trek to Sherpa Gaun. You will cross a beautiful river and then ascend uphill through the forest. Then, you will take an uphill trail leading towards Lamite Bhanjyang. You will cross the beautiful You will follow the trail to a river and cross a bridge of Amji river, and continue walking through the tranquil trails to arrive in Sherpagaun. You will stay at Sherpagaun for the night.

Day 20:Trek from Sherpa Gaun to Khebang

Sherpa Gaun Elevation: (2200 m / 7217 ft)
Khebang Elevation: (1910 m / 6266 ft)
Trek Duration: 5 hours

Your destination is Khebang on this day. You will traverse the zigzag terrains and uphill and downhill sections on this day. The enchanting traditional villages and farmlands can be seen along the trail which will provide you glimpses of way of life of the locals. Trekking for total duration of 5 to 6 hours you which arrive in Khebang village which is mainly inhabited by the Limbu communities and its surrounded by lush greenery. You will stay overnight at one of the teahouses in the Khebang Village. 

Day 21: Trek from Khebang to Happukhola

Khebang Elevation: (1910 m / 6266 ft)
Happukhola Elevation: (1050 m / 3444 ft)
Trek Duration: 5 hours

On this day you will head towards Happukhola from Khebang. You will trek through the Khebang pass and come across beautiful traditional villages where you can get glimpse of the local lifestyle. You will cross the tranquil forests, beautiful Kabeli Khola and terraced farms and picturesque villages to make it to Happukhola.

This is the final day of your Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, where you will cover long distances by walking. You can then head towards your designated teahouse for rest for the night after concluding your journey on foot.

Day 22: Drive to Ilam from Happukhola

Happukhola Elevation: (1050 m / 3444 ft)
Ilam Elevation: (1627 m / 5337 ft)
Drive Duration: 4 hours

On this day you will drive to Ilam from Happu Khola. After a wholesome breakfast at your teahouse in Happukhola, you will embark on a 4 hour drive heading towards Ilam. You will enjoy driving through off roads as well as smooth winding roads.

Likewise, the beautiful views of hills, farms, traditional settlements and local markets can be seen along the way. Then after a 4 hour long drive you will finally arrive in Ilam. You will stay at a hotel in Ilam overnight.

Day 23: Drive from Ilam to Bhadrapur and Fly to Kathmandu

Ilam Elevation: (1627 m / 5337 ft)

Drive Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Bhadrapur Elevation: (91 m / 298 ft)
Kathmandu Elevation: (1360 m / 4461 ft)
Flight Duration: 45 minutes


On the 23rd day you will enjoy a scenic drive from Ilam to Bhadrapur and fly to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur. The drive is exhilarating and offers enchanting views of hills, tea gardens and modern and traditional settlements. In 4 to 5 hours you will arrive in Bhadrapur and then board the flight to Kathmandu. The 45-minute flight offers beautiful views of cities and hills keeping you captivated throughout the journey. After you land at the airport, we will drop you off at your hotel in Kathmandu, where you can take much needed rest.

Day 24: Departure day

On this day, we will receive you from the hotel and drive you off to the international airport.  You will then board a flight back to your home country or next destination. Your Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek might have ended, but the phenomenal experiences you had during the journey will be with you forever.

In addition, a professional trekking guide will accompany you during the journey. Likewise, a porter will assist you in carrying the heavy bags.

Required Permits for Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

Permits are crucial while trekking in Nepal. They are issued to keep track of the trekkers for their safety.  With the records kept at different checkpoints, the authorities can track the trekkers and provide needed assistance in emergencies. In addition, the authorities utilize the permit revenue to conserve natural resources and cultural sites, which helps promote sustainable tourism. To trek in Kanchenjunga Circuit, you will need the following permits:

  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) Permit : (US$ 20 for the first four weeks and US$ 25 per week from the fifth week onwards)
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP):  (US$ 20 per person)
