Overview

Walking as far west as Nepal is like going back to when the early Europeans began exploring the Himalayas. The locals will greet you with genuine curiosity. You will enjoy the connection to this place where very few westerners make an effort to visit. The region has an ancient political history as the seat of the first Malla Empire, and the stone and other building remains have been taken from almost every village.

The route from Dolpo is still a typical Nepali and Tibetan trade route. It leads directly to Nepal’s largest lake, Rara. From here, we cross the Great Himalayan range along the Karnali River and travel the impressive routes to Humla, the largest and most remote region in Nepal. And finally, the Tibetan border and east-west of the Great Himalayan Route (GHT). This trip marks the end of a remarkable and very unusual journey across Nepal as a whole Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) for those completing the entire Great Himalayan Trail. 

During this journey, there will be sections where the route is either very strange or poorly defined. Space in other parts of the camp will also be severely limited. It may be necessary to make changes to the trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather, snow or trail, river water levels, or group movement. Your tour guide will advise you on any changes if this happens.

All GHT participants must be flexible and open-minded. GHT should be considered an experiment in the true sense of the word.

It is a 27-day trek to Muchu, Asia Lekh, Yari, and ten other places in Nepal. Our final phase of GHT begins with exploring the outstanding natural beauty; of Rara National Park, before crossing the Great Himalayan Range through landscapes covered with wildflowers and entering the Karnali tunnel to the Yari Valley and the Yari Valley Tibetan border. This is a very long journey. We are walking as far west as Nepal is like going back to when the early Europeans began exploring the Himalayas.

Three permits are needed which are the Rara National Park Entry Permit (USD 30), the Humla Restricted Area Permit for the Yari Valley sections (USD 90 for 10 days), and the TIMS card (USD 20). Nepal Mountain Adventure processes all restricted area permits including the Humla documentation in Kathmandu well before departure.

What is the best time for the Rara Lake with Humla Yari Valley Trek?

Autumn (October to November) is the best season for this combination. The far northwest of Nepal has a continental climate that is significantly drier and colder than the rest of Nepal. Spring (April to May) is the second option. Winter from December to February brings extreme cold to both Rara and the Humla Yari Valley making trekking conditions very harsh.
