The Annapurna Circuit trek kicks off in Kathmandu with sightseeing and prep before heading on a 7-hour local bus ride to Besisahar and a subsequent 6-hour jeep journey to Chame. From Chame, the trek moves through Upper Pisang and Manang via Nawal, allowing acclimatization at 3540 meters and side trips. The route continues to Yar Kharka and Thorang High Camp, leading to the challenging Thorang La pass at 5416 meters, followed by a descent to Muktinath at 3780 meters. The trek then heads to Tatopani’s natural hot springs before a 5-hour bus ride to Pokhara and concludes with a return to Kathmandu, either by drive or flight, wrapping up the adventure.
The Annapurna Circuit trek presents several challenges. Firstly, the altitude variation, reaching up to Thorang La Pass at 5416 meters, demands careful acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. The diverse terrain, from lush valleys to high-altitude arid landscapes, involves steep ascents and descents, testing one’s physical endurance and stamina. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations, potentially causing delays or difficult trekking conditions. Additionally, the long duration of the trek requires mental resilience and adaptability to the rugged, remote terrain and basic accommodations. Generally, the Annapurna Circuit’s combination of altitude, terrain, and duration make it a physically and mentally demanding trek.
The cost of the Annapurna Circuit trek typically varies based on various factors such as the duration, accommodations, guides/porters, permits, and personal expenses. On average, a 10 to 20-day trek can range from $1000 to $2000 USD per person, covering permits (ACAP and TIMS), accommodation (teahouses or lodges), meals, guide/porter fees, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses. Costs can fluctuate based on the season, trekker’s preferences for luxuries, and additional activities, but it’s essential to budget adequately while allowing for some flexibility.

The Annapurna Circuit is a popular trekking route in Nepal that takes you through a diverse range of landscapes and altitudes. The highest point of the circuit is the Thorong La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level. This pass is a challenging and thrilling part of the trek, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
The length of the Annapurna Circuit can vary depending on the specific trail chosen and any side trips or detours taken along the way. However, the typical distance covered for the main circuit is around 160-230 kilometers (100-145 miles).
The starting point of the Annapurna Circuit is usually Besisahar, which is approximately 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. From there, the trek generally follows a counter-clockwise route, passing through different regions and villages such as Manang, Thorong La Pass, Mustang, Jomsom, Tatopani, and Ghorepani.
The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit trek is the Thorong La Pass, which stands at an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level. The pass is located in the Manang District of Nepal and is a significant milestone for trekkers on the circuit. Crossing the Thorong La Pass is considered one of the highlights of the trek, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and other peaks in the Himalayas. The pass is a challenging section of the trek, and proper acclimatization and preparation are essential before attempting to cross it.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Nepal Mountain Adventure starts from USD 1,199 per person including a licensed guide, porter, teahouse accommodation, three daily meals, ACAP permit, and TIMS card for the full circuit from Besisahar to Pokhara.
The Annapurna Circuit is rated challenging due to its length, the high altitude crossing of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m, and the total elevation gain across 15 to 18 days. Strong fitness, prior trekking experience, and careful acclimatization at Manang (3,519 m) are strongly recommended.
Nepal Mountain Adventure’s full Annapurna Circuit Trek takes 15 to 18 days starting from Besisahar by bus, trekking through Chamje, Chame, Pisang, Manang, Thorong La Pass, Muktinath, Marpha, and Tatopani before finishing with a scenic bus to Pokhara.
Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit and one of the most famous mountain passes in the world. The crossing requires a very early morning start from Thorong High Camp (4,925 m) and takes 5 to 6 hours of steep ascent followed by a long descent to Muktinath Temple.
The best seasons are autumn (October to November) and spring (March to April). October has the most reliable weather for Thorong La Pass crossing. The pass can be closed by heavy snowfall between December and February making those months risky for the full circuit.
Two permits are needed which are the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP, USD 30) and the TIMS card (USD 20). Both can be obtained at the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara and Nepal Mountain Adventure arranges these before departure.
The highest point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m, reached on a single long crossing day from Thorong High Camp. The pass offers a panoramic view of the Annapurna Himalaya on one side and the dry Mustang landscape descending toward Muktinath on the other.
The Annapurna Circuit passes through more diverse landscapes and cultures than almost any other trek on earth, going from subtropical jungle to high altitude desert in one journey, crossing a 5,416 m pass, visiting ancient Buddhist monasteries, natural hot springs at Tatopani, and the sacred Hindu site of Muktinath.
Nepal Mountain Adventure builds a mandatory rest and acclimatization day at Manang (3,519 m) into the itinerary, along with a gradual altitude gain from Besisahar at 820 m to Manang. An optional day hike to Gangapurna Lake or Ice Lake on the acclimatization day further helps the body adjust before the Thorong La Pass crossing.
Yes, some trekkers walk the circuit from Muktinath to Manang in the reverse direction but the Besisahar to Manang direction is strongly recommended by NMA as it allows for natural gradual acclimatization before the Thorong La Pass crossing, making the summit attempt significantly safer and more successful.
