I am not a hardcore trekker and I was genuinely nervous about whether I could handle this. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek met me exactly where I was and then quietly blew my mind anyway. Walking through Magar and Gurung villages in the Annapurna Conservation Area, rhododendron forests so thick and red they felt unreal, and the kind of slow peaceful rhythm that makes you remember why you travel in the first place.
And then Poon Hill at 3,210 meters at 5am. I had seen the photos and thought I knew what to expect. I really did not. Dhaulagiri at 8,167 meters, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli all turning from dark silhouettes into blazing gold as the sun came up while thirty strangers around me went completely silent at the same moment. That is not something a photo ever prepares you for. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is called a short beginner trek in Nepal and yes technically that is true but what it does to you is anything but small.
