Is Mera Peak the highest trekking peak in Nepal?

Yes, Mera Peak at 6,476 m is the highest of Nepal’s officially classified trekking peaks making it the ultimate high altitude trekking peak achievement available without a full mountaineering expedition permit. It is also one of the technically easiest peaks at this altitude making it achievable for fit non-technical climbers with proper preparation.

How difficult is Mera Peak for non-climbers?

Mera Peak is rated moderate in technical difficulty making it one of the most accessible 6,000 m summits in the world for non-technical climbers. The standard route is a non-technical snow climb with crampons and ice axe required but no fixed rope or vertical ice sections. The primary challenge is the extreme altitude of 6,476 m rather than technical climbing difficulty.

What is the best time to climb Mera Peak?

Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are the best seasons. Spring is particularly popular as weather windows are more reliable and longer on Mera’s summit. Nepal Mountain Adventure also occasionally operates winter ascents in November to December for experienced climbers who want the mountain in snow conditions with fewer other teams on the route.

What permits are needed for Mera Peak?

Two permits are required which are the Mera Peak Climbing Permit (USD 250 in spring, USD 125 in autumn) from the Nepal Mountaineering Association and the Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit (USD 30). Nepal Mountain Adventure arranges both permits in Kathmandu well before the departure date.

What can I see from the Mera Peak summit at 6,476 m?

The Mera Peak summit delivers one of the greatest panoramic views in all of Nepal with five of the world’s six highest mountains visible including Everest (8,849 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), and Cho Oyu (8,188 m) simultaneously in one sweeping 360-degree view. It is considered the finest panoramic summit viewpoint accessible on any Nepal trekking peak.

What technical equipment does NMA provide for Mera Peak?

Nepal Mountain Adventure provides crampons, ice axes, harnesses, carabiners, rope, high altitude sleeping bags (rated to minus 25 degrees), and expedition tents for all Mera Peak summit attempts. Climbers must bring their own double layer mountaineering boots and personal high altitude clothing system. Visit NMA’s packing list for a full personal gear breakdown.

Can Mera Peak be combined with Island Peak climbing?

Yes, Nepal Mountain Adventure offers a combined Mera Peak and Island Peak package of 26 to 30 days that climbs both 6,000 m peaks in one trip via the challenging Amphu Lapcha Pass (5,845 m) crossing between the Hinku and Imja valleys. This combination is rated as the most ambitious standard trekking peak itinerary available in Nepal and is recommended only for experienced high altitude trekkers.

Is Mera Peak a good choice for first time Himalayan climbers?

Yes, Mera Peak is one of the top three recommended first Himalayan climbing experiences in Nepal. Its non-technical standard route, the highest achievable altitude among trekking peaks, and the extraordinary five-peak panorama from the summit make it the most rewarding beginner Himalayan climbing objective. Nepal Mountain Adventure has guided hundreds of first-time high altitude climbers to the Mera Peak summit successfully.

What altitude sickness precautions are taken on Mera Peak?

The Mera Peak approach includes mandatory acclimatization days at Khotang (3,560 m) and Khare (5,045 m) before the summit push. Nepal Mountain Adventure’s guides conduct daily pulse oximeter checks throughout the approach and carry supplemental oxygen, Diamox, and dexamethasone for emergency altitude management. Please review NMA’s travel insurance recommendations before booking.

The view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Cho Yuo etc.. from High Camp on the Mera peak trail is one of the most incredible views that one might experience as a mere human (ie not from a plane). I would recommend this experience for anyone looking for the unique, off beaten path beauty of our planet.

Not an easy trek, but relatively accessible for people in generally good fitness shape and mental toughness.
